Caregivers in North Las Vegas NV
A busy family caregiver needs as many tools as possible in order to relax and to beat stress. Visualization can be highly effective if you practice it.
Find a Comfortable Area to Relax In
If you only have a few minutes, you might want to find a comfortable chair. If you have longer, you might want to lie down for a little while. Regardless, choose an area where you’re not in a high traffic area and you can spend some time quietly visualizing a happy environment.
Start Out with a Relaxing Environment
In some cases, you may be able to control your environment for this exercise. If you’re at home, for example, you might be able to light some candles, put on your favorite calming music, and turn out the lights. If you’re in a stressful situation away from home, you might not be able to do all of that. So it’s important to practice at home where you can control your environment so that you can develop the skills to visualize when you really need it.
Picture a Place that Makes You Happy
Close your eyes and fire up your imagination. Start with a space that makes you happy. You might be by the ocean, in a meadow, or even in a mountainous area. Really put a lot of detail into the image. What time of day is it? Are there clouds in the sky? Is it sunny and warm or is it cool and breezy? Get into as many details as you can and hold the full image in your mind for as long as you can. What can you smell or hear? All of these details make this place more real for you.
Block Out Other Distractions
While you’re visualizing, you might find it difficult at first to block out distractions. As you become more experienced, however, you’ll find that the act of concentrating on your image can help you to block out any distractions going on around you. At home, music can help to do that for you, but eventually you’ll be able to do it on your own.
Set a Timer if You Need One
You may become so engrossed in your visualization that you lose track of time. that’s perfectly fine because it means that you’re holding onto your image quite well. If you need to be back in operation soon, though, you may want to set a timer to bring you back to the real world.
Once you become more experienced, you’ll be able to use visualization any time you need to relax.
