Depressed senior woman at homeThere comes a time in every caregiving journey when you start to feel a little bit bored by what is going on every day. This is perfectly normal but you might feel a little bit guilty about those feelings.

Shake up Your Routines a Bit

Routines are a wonderful thing because they allow your days to run seamlessly. But they can also become stale after a period of time. If you’re starting to feel restless, that can be a sign that you need to assess how well your routines are working for you and your senior. Sometimes changing up those daily and weekly routines just a small bit can make a big difference.

Find New Activities to Do with Your Senior

You might also find that it’s time to start trying some new activities to do with your aging adult. You might enjoy taking a class together or starting to go on nature walks. If the seasons are changing, this can be a perfect opportunity to try something that’s related to that time of the year.

Take Some Respite Time

It’s also possible that what you really need right now is a break. Even uneventful caregiving can take a toll on you every day and you need to spend time taking care of yourself. Hire home care providers for a few hours a week and spend some time relearning what gives you joy. When you return to caregiving, you might find that it’s nowhere near as dull as it felt before you took time away.

Take a Look at What Feels So Dull for You

You might also want to take some time and journal about what it is that is feeling so dull for you right now. If your elderly family member has had lots of health issues in the past, for instance, you might have gotten used to waiting for that other shoe to drop. And now that she’s been healthy for a while, you feel slightly uncomfortable. It’s worth taking the time to explore those feelings so that you can notice patterns.

Don’t feel guilty if you’re finding that caregiving is becoming boring for you. This isn’t a statement about your senior or how you feel about her. What it more likely is involves routines that have become a little bit stale. You certainly don’t want too much excitement out of life as a caregiver, but this can be a nudge to get back to your life a bit.
