Six Ways to Help Your Dad Complete Daily Tasks Without Frustration

Home Care in Las Vegas NV
Home Care in Las Vegas NV

Your dad has a harder time living independently for some reason. He might have arthritis or dementia. He may have had a stroke and is regaining former skills.

Because of that, your dad becomes very frustrated when trying to do his tasks. You don’t want to get in his way, but you also want to make sure he’s supported. How can you help him complete his daily routines when he is so easily frustrated? Here are a few ideas and how home care can help.

Create a To-Do List

Create a to-do list that he can follow each day. It gives him structure to follow, which is especially helpful if he often forgets. A reusable to-do list is best.

Use a permanent marker on a whiteboard. Write his daily tasks in permanent marker, and make boxes next to each item that he can check off with a dry erase marker. That way, you’re not creating lists every day.

Step In Only as Needed

Don’t help your dad unless he really needs it. Let him try to do things on his own. When he struggles, offer to help.

Follow his cues. Make sure you offer and don’t just take over. Let him guide you into the areas where you help and step back when he doesn’t think he needs your assistance.

Teach Him Ways to Step Back and De-Stress

Frustration can lead to stress, and that stress makes him more frustrated. If your dad is feeling frustrated, it can help to stop and de-stress. Make sure he knows how to stop, take a deep breath, and clear his mind before he tries again.

One of the easiest ways to ease stress and frustration is by stopping everything and focusing on his breathing. Stepping outside for fresh air also helps. When he breathes, he wants to get his stomach to extend. Have him hold his breath in for a count of five and then slowly breathe out.

Invest in Equipment to Help Him

Support your dad by investing in tools that help him stay independent. A grabber tool can help him reach items he dropped or grasp items on upper shelves. Grab bars help him with stability getting in and out of the shower or bathtub.

Pay Attention to Changes

Pay attention to your dad’s changing abilities. As he gets older or his health changes, he may need more help than he currently gets. If you’re noticing those changes as they happen, you’re able to plan ahead.

You can arrange to help him more as he needs it. For example, you might see your dad suddenly having difficulty on the stairs. Before he falls, you could add services like laundry that stop him from having to go up and down the stairs to get to the laundry room.

Hire Home Care to Help

Your dad may not want to accept help from you. It can be challenging to rely on your children, especially when you’re used to being in a parental role. Your dad’s frustration may be related to his embarrassment.

To prevent the frustration linked to embarrassment, hire a caregiver to help him. Home care aides can help your dad with his daily routine. With home care, your dad has a caregiver to assist with housekeeping, laundry, transportation, meals, and anything else he cannot do independently.

Learn These Four Facts on American Diabetes Association Alert Day

Home Care in Las Vegas NV
Home Care in Las Vegas NV

The American Diabetes Association established Diabetes Alert Day to fall on the fourth Tuesday each March. The goal is to raise awareness of the realities of diabetes and the impact it has on your health. Have your parents seen their doctor and talked about their diabetes risk?

Maybe, your mom or dad has already been diagnosed with diabetes or prediabetes. It’s important to learn what to do to prevent diabetes from worsening their health. These four diabetes facts are essential for you to know.

The Type 2 Diabetes Risk Factors

Several other health issues increase your risk of type 2 diabetes. If your mom or dad has any of these conditions or histories, it heightens the risk.

  • Family history
  • Heart disease
  • High blood pressure
  • High cholesterol
  • Obesity
  • Sedentary lifestyle

Diabetes also impacts the risk of being diagnosed with chronic health conditions like gum disease, stroke, and heart disease. That’s why it’s essential to get tested for prediabetes.

Millions Have Diabetes or Prediabetes

In the U.S., around 96 million adults have prediabetes. Of those, 80% may not even know it. There are no symptoms, and it’s often silent until a blood test reveals high glucose levels.

Over 37 million people have diabetes. About 20% of those people do not realize it. Type 2 diabetes accounts for nine out of ten cases of diabetes. This is a 2x increase in just two decades.

Prediabetes Shows an Increased Risk

Your parents’ doctors can check their risk for prediabetes to determine the risk of developing diabetes down the road. An A1C test is a blood test that checks the average glucose levels in the blood.

If the A1C test is used, make sure your parents do not have underlying health issues like anemia, kidney disease, or liver disease. Those conditions can impact the results.

Medications Help Lower Blood Sugar Levels

The first steps to managing diabetes are losing weight, exercising often, and eating a healthy diet. Your mom and dad should skip sugary, high-fat foods and focus on vegetables, fruits, whole grains, non-fat dairy, and lean protein.

If those steps don’t help, medications may be recommended. One of the options for type 2 diabetes is a medication that slows glucose production within the liver. These medications aid in how your body uses insulin.

Arrange to Have Home Care Providers Helping Your Mom and Dad

Whether your parents have diabetes or have a higher risk due to prediabetes, they need to pay close attention to their health through diet and exercise. If they don’t feel comfortable shopping for groceries and cooking meals, bringing in home care can be the best step you take.

With the help of home care aides, your parents have someone supporting them regarding exercise routines, meals, and medications. Their caregivers encourage them to go for walks or put on an instructional Yoga video. They provide medication reminders, assistance with shopping, and help with menus and meal preparation. Call to learn more.

Employee of the Month

Golden Heart has elected Denise “Quinn” Brown as our amazing December Caregiver of the Month! Quinn is originally from Philadelphia, PA and lived there for 39 years before moving to Reynoldsburg, OH for another 22 years. Luckily for us, Quinn relocated to Las Vegas one year ago and eventually crossed paths with us! Quinn has five daughters, who have given here for grandsons, 3 granddaughters, and soon another grandson who will be joining the family in June 2022. For over 30 years, Quinn worked in healthcare as a State tested Nurse Aide, Restorative Aide, and Hospice Aide. After retirement, Quinn found that she missed taking care of others and this inspired her to reenter healthcare and become a Caregiver. Her favorite part of caregiving is being able to spend one-on-one time with her clients and sharing stories with each other. Quinn is proud of the progress she has seen her client make because she says the experience is rewarding and very personal to her. She is also incredibly proud of her daughters and all that they’ve accomplished. In the next five years, Quinn hopes to be enjoying retirement in good health. Quinn shows what it means to be a Golden Heart Caregiver and we are so grateful for what she brings to our team. Congratulations on everything you’ve accomplished Quinn, you’re awesome!

October 2021 Caregiver of the Month

Our valued Golden Heart Caregiver, Lorna, has been recognized as our October Caregiver of the Month! Lorna migrated to the United States from the Philippines in 1980 and received her citizenship in 1996. Lorna enjoys fitness in her free-time and deep-sea fishing, and a hidden talent of hers is playing guitar! Lorna says that her biggest inspiration for being a caregiver, among many other things, is the true value of life. Her favorite thing about in-home care is building bonds with her clients; including the unconditional trust that’s formed, the smile they give when they look forward to seeing her, or holding her hand to let her know they need her. Lorna’s best memory on the job is when she went on a walk with her client, and they both had so much fun talking and laughing that neither one realized it was past time for Lorna to go! The two shared a good laugh after that. Lorna’s five year goal is to become a trainer and teacher for other caregivers. She says she would love to be able to share her knowledge to help other caregivers be efficient and successful in this field. Lorna is proud of her self-love, and her ability to “embrace the good, resist the bad, and let go of the ugly” that she’s developed over years of learning. We are proud of her, too! We are lucky to have passionate caregivers like Lorna on our team. Congrats, Lorna!
